Leek is a town steeped in history containing 143 listed buildings and monuments, everywhere we look we can see our past. We gather at our monuments to remember those who fought on our behalf many of whom still have family amongst us. The Nicholson War Memorial is central to our town with further memorials at Ball Haye Green and St. Edwards churchyard, both of which are celebrating their centenary this year. These events and memorials are supported by our Royal British Legion, Friends of the Nicholson War Memorial and Leek Town Council to ensure we do indeed ‘never forget’.
Whilst thinking of these memorials it is important that we reflect and remember their purpose in making us stop and think. Especially important when enlightening young people about their part in history and it’s story and also the part this plays in our future.
January 27th is Holocaust Memorial Day when we are encouraged to remember six million Jews murdered, under the Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The theme of the day for 2022 is One Day – that one day in the future there will be no genocide. I would urge people read the One Day reflections on the website. hmd.org.uk.
Elie Wiesel wrote, ‘whatever you do in life, remember. Think higher and feel deeper’.
When we learn about our past and empathise with the experiences of others we are encouraged to reflect on its relevance for a better future.

Leek Town Mayor.
