Leek has a Twinning Agreement with Este in Italy, which has a similar population to Leek.
Many social and cultural exchanges are arranged each year by the Twinning Committee. To obtain further information about twinning, contact Cllr Pamela Wood.
Leek has been twinned with the town of Este, near Padua, Italy since 2002. Situated at the foot of the Euganei Hills and having very ancient origins, Este is a similar sized town to Leek, with a population of 18,000. It has a castle and castle walls, beautiful gardens, museum and a clock tower similar to Leek’s war memorial. Major cities near to Este include Verona, Padua and Venice. Travel to Este is quite simple. The region is served by two airports, Treviso and Venice Marco Polo, both of which are only about one hour away by train from Este.
Leek Twinning Committee
The twinning committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Dove room at Moorlands House.
Since twinning started there has been a steady increase in the number of exchanges that have taken place over the last five years, including local schools and sports clubs. The Amazing Gospel Choir was the first performing group to come to Leek and the Down Choir soon followed them.
We have a number of exchanges between the two towns that are permanently fixed in the calendar year. Este has their Flower Festival in April, Eurofest in late September and Remembrance in November.
