Looking forward to Christmas

The nights are drawing in, it is getting colder and expectations of the festivals of the winter season are being pushed to the front of people’s minds. “It was the frosty season when the sun was set and visible for many a mile, it was a time of rapture”

I think rapture still covers it when I see children sledging on a snowy day on Brough Park or enjoy the Christmas lights in the town. The Town Council puts a great deal of effort in ensuring that the people of the town as well as visitors enjoy the Xmas season. Planning for the event takes place well in advance of the mid November light switch on. The volunteers who provide the fun would appreciate a show of appreciation

The end of the year is also a time for reflection and this year particularly I think that Christmas can be a very hard time for the isolated and the destitute and we should not overlook to “feel what wretches feel “as we prepare for the holiday season. I hope that people act charitably and donate to a favourite charity during this time.

As Mayor I will be doing my bit to support charitable actions as well as joining in the Christmas cheer. I might be appearing as a mayor from a Children TV series from the 60s near you .

I raise a glass to the people of Leek and our visitors. Merry Christmas every one and Різдвом Христовим! To our Ukrainian friends

I will end with a Xmas Limerick I have composed

Santa checking his beard

Thought it rather weird

A Nintendo, a phone

A functioning drone

Have found their way into my beard.

Cllr Bill Cawley, Leek Mayor.
