Leek Christmas Lights
The Leek Christmas lights switch-on is this Friday 15th November with countdown at 6.30pm
We are really excited about the town’s Christmas Lights switch on event this coming Friday (15th) Expect great music in Sparrow Park, and lots of stalls in the Market Place and Derby St. Moorlands Radio will be broadcasting live from 1pm and Leek Rock Choir will be performing at 5.15pm by the Butter Cross in Market Place, The Salvation Army Band will be playing on Derby St and of course, all the pubs, cafes, and restaurants will be buzzing. Santa will also have a grotto in the Market Place.
John Collins will, as always, be bringing lots of fairground rides and attractions to their usual spots in High St, Market St. and the Market Place.
In Sparrow Park there will be a dance demonstration at 4.30pm by LevelUp Dance Studio. Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers will be on patrol throughout the town centre.
At 5.15pm the Oobydooby’s will be on followed by a spot of Karaoke in between acts.
The countdown will start at 6.30pm synced live on air in both the Market Place and Sparrow Park
The Billerettes will be performing later in the evening.
Then a grand finale with the live band Stone Cold Crazy who are a Queen tribute band.
Some changes to this year’s lights. Sheep Market and Stanley St will be lit up with white icicles that are becoming more and more popular across the country, and which are so effective in these lovely traditional Victorian streets.
We’re forgoing the tree in Sparrow Park this year. It’s a regular target for vandalism and we’re going to put the savings into more of the summer flowers that will show off our town centre throughout next summer.
Because of environmental and cost issues we are running down the numbers of small trees installed around the town. We are aiming to purchase a wider range of lights to put in their place over the next couple of years.
Many towns have had to cancel their lights events due to cutbacks. Our event is only possible because of the fantastic support and hard work put in by local businesses, community groups and individual volunteers.
