During the time of previous Town Clerk, a project was launched with the Allotments Committee to purge all asbestos from Leek Allotments. Without undertaking a detailed survey it was clear that there was a lot of Asbestos sheeting on several of the Towns Allotment sites. On Beggar’s Lane Allotment site, tenants were asked to identify any loose sheets from their plots for disposal. As a result we very quickly accumulated a full load, and arrangements were made after liaison with SMDC to source an approved company specialising in Asbestos disposal. While one of our Councillors was on site to supervise the removal it became apparent that there are still several structures on the site which are made of asbestos sheeting. Quote Cllr. Mike Ottewell ” It is clear this is an ongoing issue which we must continue to monitor. I shall be proposing that a proper plan is instigated”.
