Thanks for 75 years of peace in Europe.

Marking the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, Leek Town Mayor, Cllr Sue Coleman accompanied by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Stephen Wales, represented the residents of Leek in paying tribute to all those who endured hardship and sacrifice to ‘do their bit’ in helping to secure an enduring peace in Europe.

Cllr Stephen Wales
Giving thanks to those who endured.

This was an auspicious ceremony because of the Lockdown rules, since  Britain on 8th May 2020 was in the midst of the Corvid 19 pandemic. The residents of Leek, like the rest of the country, were observing strict social distancing rules to help control the spread of this disease.

It was a different story in 1945 for those who had survived six years of war time deprivation and sacrifice, were finally free to celebrate.

In honour of those who endured the war years and in particular those who made the ultimate sacrifice, poppy wreathes were laid in Ball Haye, Leekbrook and St Edwards Church, as well as the Nicholson War Memorial.

Later in the day, the Leek Town Crier, Bill Lomas participated with a global doorstep ‘Cry for Peace’.
