Reflecting on the past month I don’t want to focus on what I’ve done as Mayor, that’s easy, it’s fun, people welcome you, and there is a lot of laughing !
I want to focus instead on the work of so many of our towns people.
Trades people, businesses and, of course, an army of volunteers who have been working tirelessly to bring our town back, not just to what it was before the world changed, but to make it even better. This month we have seen the work of the Blues and Americana Festival committee come to fruition, with a festival of international, national and local talent for all to enjoy, much of it with free admission, right here in Leek. Over 70 acts in 20 venues.
The work of Totally Locally continues to support local businesses, encouraging local people and visitors to shop here in Leek. whilst enjoying spotting scarecrows. The forthcoming ‘Bat Hunt’ on October 30th sounds equally exciting.
The Town Council events sub committee has used the government’s ‘Welcome Back’ fund in order to celebrate a wonderful ‘Family Fun Day’ enjoyed by hundreds of people in our town centre. This was followed by the town Arts Trail where youngsters had their art put up in shops whilst local artists exhibited their work achieved during lockdown. It was lovely to welcome Borderland Voices who presented art work and a display explaining their recent research project, examining the role of The Women’s Land Army and the associated Timber Corps, affectionately known as the Lumber Jills. This art exhibition was the brainchild of former Leek Town Mayor, Roy Tomkinson. I’m sure this teamwork and collaboration will bring further arts and crafts work to the community’s attention in the future.
The businesses in our town continue to flourish in their own creative ways – developing opportunities to shop, and having fun on social media, all increasing footfall into our town.
Of course, this list isn’t endless, and I’m sure everyone knows their own star. One that cannot be forgotten is our Town Cryer, Bill Lomas. Out almost every day, willing to support anyone, listening, laughing and encouraging, he is what epitomises Leek, having fun, caring for each other, and welcoming our many visitors.
We’re not out of it yet. The virus continues to take it’s toll but we can at least meet up with family and friends to enjoy our lovely town. Take care.
Cllr. Lyn Swindlehurst, Mayor of Leek
